Global Perspective

As a young immigrant from Cuba, the world was my oyster. All those years closed off from other cultures was nothing short from crippling. When I started at FIU I knew I needed to gain a more cohesive understanding of the world around me. I soon realized that the community within this university is very diverse. Professors and students are aware of the importance of understanding what influences decisions across the globe.  Having this recognition within FIU really facilitated my goal to open my eyes to the world. Through my classes specifically I learned and analyzed how much of an impact someone’s culture can make in their choices and how they communicate their ideas. My sociology class showed me that we are interconnected and that our social class can affect our priorities and our health. Moreover, the way people are socialized may also differ based on their cultures. Through my communication in films class I saw the discrepancies between the different social classes exemplified through the arts. Furthermore, I was also able to understand how people can form stronger connections with others within their culture. I observed this to be true mainly because of the mutual understanding of references and customs that they share. I have learned through this observation that to cultivate bonds throughout the globe it is important to understand what influences their points of view and assumptions of the world.
